G’day, I’m Jono. I am wheelchair bound and I am on my way to becoming truly independent. Three years ago, I finally moved out of home into my own place. The complex has 6 separate units with 24/7 staff support. It was a great first step for moving away from my family and gaining independence but now I am ready to become the person I was born to be. I want to show you how you how you too can live independently, the way you want to.
On the 30th October I am going to be the key speaker at The Melbourne Disability Accommodation Forum in Pascoe Vale, which will be hosted by Hemma. I will be addressing all aspects of getting into your own home, design & location, NDIS funding and support teams. Please click here for more info and bookings.
What is SDA? (Specialist Disability Accommodation)
A few years ago, the government realised that there was a shortage of disability housing for people with complex needs and wanted to encourage commercial developers to take on disability housing projects. Specialist disability accommodation is where developers can get payments from the NDIA to build housing for NDIS participants who meet the eligibility criteria for specialist disability accommodation payments.
Hemma is a new disability house provider building their first house in Pascoe Vale and should be ready in March 2020. A couple of weeks ago, I was invited to inspect the building site and provide an assessment. I was impressed with the house so far. I also looked around the local area to check accessibility to shops, public transport and pathways. I was pleasantly surprised at how many shops & restaurants I could access in my wheelchair.
I will also be addressing some myths about NDIS and SDA and there will be plenty of opportunities for you to ask questions.
I look forward to seeing you there next Wednesday 30th October at 2.30 pm.
